161mc – Brands

My task was to pick 3 companies, brands and/or media practitioners that I like and have to analyse their online presence.

Urban Outfitters

UO is a clothing brand that has a hipster vibe and is well known for having on-trend fashion and accessories. They also sell quirky home-décor and merchandise such as vinyl records, books and more.
They have a strong online presence as they are available on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. UO also have their own website which allows people to browse around at their products and purchase items. They use their accounts on these platforms to promote and advertise their merchandise while alerting their followers of sales and new arrivals. The images shared are of models wearing and displaying their products, these are often bright and bold images. They also share artwork and customer images. Their posts are unique and represent the brand really well. UO use their social media to interact with their followers and share moments such as what they’re up to and behind the scenes. All their social media is used for the same thing such as sharing images of their clothes and promoting the brand so each social media account is very similar in terms of what they post.
They also have specific social media for specific locations such as @urbanoutfitterseu, @uolondon, @uohawaii and many more. These accounts cater specifically to that location and what is available there at that time.

LUSH

Lush are a cosmetics brand that sells hand-made vegetarian and vegan products. They are best known for their bath bombs, face scrubs and masks, creams and much more. They are available on most social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr. They also have their own website where they display their products allowing them to be purchased, information about their products such as ingredients and what its used for and if customers are curious they even show how their products are made. All images on their social media are bright, bold and very colourful which helps them stand out and it represents the brand very well. Unlike UO, Lush use different social media accounts for different things.
On their Facebook they share the fun they get up to in store, offering spa treatments and just generally showing off their products. Their Facebook is fairly personal in terms of allowing the viewer to get up a closer viewer and an in-depth view of the workers and the products. The workers create and share videos of them advertising the products and informing their followers of new products. As the workers are sharing videos of them talking directly to the camera it creates a better bond and understanding between the brand and their followers.
Lush use their Twitter account to interact with followers, notify them of upcoming live videos and share news posts about cosmetics and nature.
Their Instagram and Tumblr promote their products and they also share health and beauty tips.
Just like UO they also have multiple social media accounts accommodating to the location such as @lushoxfordstreet, @lushspacardiff, @lushmanchester etc.

The 1975

The 1975 are an English indie rock band originating from Manchester. Their logo is a rectangle with “The 1975” going across.
The 1975 changed their branding as before they were very minimalistic as everything was often black and white such as their music videos, images, logo and more. Trying to grow as a band they changed their branding and started to become more mainstream which meant changing their image. They are still minimalistic but they now it’s fairly colourful, they have a slightly different style of music and a change in image. This caused some controversy and a few upset fans but besides this, the band did grow and the change of image got them more noticed as people started talking about them a lot more.
As well as having their own website, they are active on most social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Their website is very minimalistic with a white and pink theme but they don’t have their logo displayed. The website is very simple as it just has a music video and links to their new album, songs, merch, tickets and more.
Their social media is all the same as they post the same pictures on all forms of social media. This ensures that all their followers on all platforms get to see what they’re sharing and no one is missing out. They have a specific way of sharing their posts as they would share their pictures but the caption / / W O U L D B E T Y P E D L I K E T H I S / /
This is their unique way of getting across their message. The images they share are either dark and showing off the lights and setting of the stage or of band members coloured with bright bold colours from the strobe lights. They would often post the same picture multiple times with the same caption which could be done to help get more attention to the song or album they are promoting. They are professional with what they post as it is all surrounding their music and the band, nothing else. This is very different to some other artists/bands as they would use their social media to not only share their live performances but to also share memes and personal life whereas The 1975 accounts are strictly of them.
